Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says he and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara have ended their long-running political fight and agreed to work together in peace.

Wike made this announcement on Thursday night after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family,” Wike told reporters.

He admitted the crisis had lasted for months but said it was now over. “Just like humans, you have a disagreement, and then you also have time to settle your disagreement. That has been finally concluded today,” he added.

Governor Fubara also confirmed the peace deal and described it as a moment of divine intervention.

“For me, it’s a day we have to thank Almighty God,” Fubara said. “What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God… peace has returned in Rivers State.”

He promised to protect the peace deal and ensure unity in the state. “We’ll do everything within our power to make sure that we sustain it this time around,” he said.

The crisis between Wike and Fubara began soon after Fubara became governor in May 2023. By October, lawmakers loyal to Wike tried to impeach Fubara, and in response, the governor demolished the Assembly building after a mysterious fire.

The fight led to a serious political crisis in the state, and despite an earlier peace deal brokered by President Tinubu in December 2023, tensions continued to grow.

In March 2025, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, suspended Governor Fubara, and appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) as sole administrator of the state for six months.

Now, with this latest agreement, both leaders say they are ready to move forward together.

Wike urged everyone to put the past behind them: “I enjoin everybody who believes to work with us… There’s no more acrimony.”
