Bandits struck fear into the hearts of residents of Maradun town, the hometown of Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, as they invaded the area in the early hours of Friday.

The attack resulted in the tragic loss of two lives and the abduction of approximately 30 others. Maradun, situated in Zamfara State, serves as the headquarters of Maradun local government area.

Although the exact number of abducted individuals remained unconfirmed at the time of reporting, estimates suggested around 30 victims, including women, children, and adults from the numerous affected households.

A traditional ruler, whose residence fell victim to the bandits’ rampage, expressed shock and dismay at the alarming level of insecurity prevailing in the town. Recounting the harrowing experience, he revealed how he managed to hide while his family members sought refuge through alternate escape routes.

Expressing his apprehension, the unnamed traditional leader highlighted the recurring attacks on the town, noting a similar incident just the previous week involving the rustling of cattle and sheep by the bandits. This pattern of violence underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and intervention.

Hassan Ibrahim, a resident of Maradun, described “the attack as horrifying, detailing how the bandits strategically positioned themselves at various locations armed with sophisticated weaponry. Ibrahim narrowly escaped by fleeing to safety upon hearing the invaders’ approach, overhearing their plans to search for hidden individuals.”

Amidst the chaos and trauma inflicted by the bandits, Ibrahim emphasized “the crucial role of Minister Bello Matawalle, the former governor of Zamfara State, in addressing the escalating security crisis in his hometown.”

He urged “Matawalle to intervene promptly to prevent further attacks and restore peace and stability to Maradun. The community’s plea for assistance underscores the urgent need for decisive action to quell the scourge of banditry plaguing the region.”
