United States President-elect Donald Trump has appointed billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The announcement was made by Trump on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, and shared via Musk’s X social media handle early on Wednesday. According to Trump, this move aims to transform and streamline the U.S. government by reducing bureaucracy and increasing efficiency.
“I am pleased to announce that the great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency. Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excessive regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies,” Trump said.
Trump, who defeated Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, emphasized that DOGE will collaborate with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to achieve large-scale structural reforms.
“It will become, potentially, ‘The Manhattan Project’ of our time,” Trump added, highlighting his vision for sweeping changes in government operations.

Musk, who owns the social media platform X, electric car giant Tesla, and internet service provider Starlink, expressed enthusiasm for the task ahead.
“Anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people, should prepare for change,” Musk said.
He and Ramaswamy, he added, aim to “liberate our economy and make the US government accountable to ‘We the People.'”
The initiative, slated to conclude by July 4, 2026, aligns with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Trump described it as “the perfect gift to America.”
He expressed confidence in Musk and Ramaswamy’s ability to deliver a leaner and more effective government.
Trump’s cabinet appointments for his upcoming administration also include several notable figures. Lee Zeldin will lead the Environmental Protection Agency, Mike Waltz will serve as National Security Advisor, and Susie Wiles has been named White House Chief of Staff. Tom Homan will assume the role of Border Czar, Elise Stefanik will become Ambassador to the United Nations, and Stephen Miller will serve as Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy.
Musk, a vocal supporter of the Trump-Vance presidential ticket in the last election, contributed $75 million to a pro-Trump spending group. His appointment, along with that of Ramaswamy, signals Trump’s ambition to overhaul federal government processes and cut down on what he views as excessive spending and inefficiency.
The establishment of DOGE represents a bold move to create what Trump described as “an entrepreneurial approach to government never seen before.”
