World record holder Tobi Amusan has won her fifth national title in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.
Amusan, 28, dominated the race from start to finish, clocking a time of 12.57 seconds to claim the gold medal.
“I feel great. It’s always an honour to win at home,” Amusan said after the race, as she continues her preparations for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.
She finished ahead of fast-rising star Adaobi Tabugbo, who placed second with 13.03 seconds, and Faith Osamuyi, who came third in 13.36 seconds.

In the men’s 400m final, Gafar Badmus took the top spot with 45.71 seconds, beating Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29s) and David Akhalu (46.91s) to second and third places, respectively.
There was a surprise in the women’s 400m final as veteran runner Patience Okon-George was disqualified. In her absence, African U-20 champion Favour Onyah won the race in 52.69 seconds. Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna followed in second and third.
In another thrilling moment, African U-20 champion Chioma Nweke won the women’s 100m national title for the first time, beating defending champion Olayinka Olajide.
Nweke ran 11.27 seconds, while Olajide finished in 11.39 seconds, and Iyanuoluwa Bada came third with 11.45 seconds.
Speaking with PUNCH Sports Extra, Nweke said, “I feel very amazing. It feels good to become a national champion.”
She added, “I have to go back and try to qualify for the Commonwealth Games next year.”
The national trials in Lagos featured some of the country’s best athletes and served as a key step toward international competitions later this year.
