Seven Arrested Amid Fuel Price Hike Protest in Kwara

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has announced the arrest of seven individuals suspected of engaging in unlawful activities during a protest against fuel price hikes in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State. The protest, led by commercial vehicle operators, took place on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

In a statement released on Saturday, NSCDC spokesman Ayoola Michael confirmed that the arrests were made after the suspects were allegedly involved in violent behavior and theft during the protest. Michael explained that the situation escalated when the protest, initially organized by tricycle and motorcycle riders, was hijacked by hoodlums who took advantage of the unrest to commit crimes.

“On Thursday, September 5th, 2024, one Olusegun Taiwo of the Sango area in Ilorin reported a case of criminal conspiracy and theft at our station office. She stated that while she was on her way to work on a motorcycle, she was attacked by a group of youths, believed to be hoodlums, who forcibly took her bag, phones, and other valuables,” Michael said.

Following the report, NSCDC operatives launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of seven suspects. Michael noted that these individuals were identified as part of a group responsible for causing public disorder in the Ilorin metropolis, especially in the Sango area.

“The protest was overtaken by hoodlums, who exploited the situation to steal personal belongings such as bags, phones, and other valuable items. This led to increased unrest in the Ilorin metropolis,” Michael added.

The arrests highlight the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining order during public demonstrations, especially when such protests are hijacked by criminal elements. The NSCDC has assured residents that they will continue to work diligently to protect the public and bring those responsible for unlawful activities to justice.
