The Nigerian Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to discipline and order in legislative proceedings following an alleged misconduct by Senator Natasha Akpoti. The Senate emphasized that all lawmakers must follow the established rules to maintain the integrity of the legislative body.
Former Senator Tijani Ahmed, who represented Kogi Central from 1999 to 2003, issued a statement addressing the matter. He explained that every senator must adhere to the Senate’s rules, including speaking only from designated seats.
“Every Senator is expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting their esteemed office,” Ahmed said. “Unfortunately, Senator Akpoti allegedly violated this rule by speaking from an unauthorized seat, despite attempts by the Senate Whip and the Senate President to correct the situation.”

Senate Emphasizes Leadership and Discipline
The Senate noted that the title of “Distinguished Senator” comes with a responsibility to uphold the highest standards of leadership and discipline. Lawmakers are expected to set an example and ensure that legislative proceedings run smoothly.
“Her conduct not only disrupted proceedings but also undermined the integrity of the Senate as an institution,” Ahmed added.
The statement further warned that failure to follow the Senate’s rules could erode public confidence in the institution. The Senate is responsible for making laws that promote peace, order, and good governance, and any disorderly behavior contradicts these principles.
Possible Disciplinary Action
The Senate has hinted at possible disciplinary action to reinforce the importance of order in the chamber. While the specific measures were not disclosed, the statement made it clear that no lawmaker is above the rules.
“No individual is above the rules that govern our legislative process,” the statement stressed.
The Senate reassured Nigerians that it remains committed to upholding discipline and ensuring that legislative activities continue without unnecessary disruptions.
