Combined security forces early Wednesday neutralized four suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Eha Alumona, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. According to a statement released by Governor Peter Mbah’s media office, the joint effort involved personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police, and the State Security Services.
The security team reportedly disrupted a planned attack by the suspects and recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition.
“Some of the gunmen fled into the bush with gunshot injuries,” the statement revealed, indicating that the operation was successful in deterring what could have been a major security threat in the area.
During the raid, the operatives apprehended a high-ranking ESN commander who had been on the wanted list and had been operating from neighboring states.
The statement explained, “The commander led the security operatives to their hideouts, where they found stashed arms, charms, and other dangerous objects.”
Two security officers sustained minor injuries during the exchange of gunfire but are reported to be in stable condition and receiving treatment.
Governor Peter Mbah expressed his commitment to combating criminal elements and ensuring the safety of Enugu residents. The statement highlighted his recent initiatives aimed at boosting security across the state.
“This operation is part of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah’s efforts to flush out criminal elements and hoodlums behind insecurity in the state,” the statement noted.

To bolster security, Governor Mbah has launched the Distress Response Squad and invested in modern technology, including a Command and Control Centre and surveillance systems designed to quickly detect and address security threats.
The operation’s success has been met with mixed reactions from locals, some of whom are relieved at the enhanced security measures, while others have expressed concerns over possible retaliation.
One resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, remarked, “We are happy that security forces are taking strong measures, but we hope peace and safety can be restored without escalating violence.”
