President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will speak to a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives on Thursday, June 12, in Abuja as part of the 2025 Democracy Day celebration.
The event will take place at the House of Representatives Chamber inside the National Assembly Complex. President Tinubu is expected to arrive at 12 noon, while the session will start at 11 a.m.
A statement by House spokesman Akin Rotimi said the theme for this year’s event is: “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
“President Tinubu is expected to attend the occasion as Special Guest of Honour and will deliver a presidential address to the joint sitting,” the statement read.

Democracy Day in Nigeria is held every June 12 to honour the 1993 presidential election, which many Nigerians consider the fairest in the country’s history. Businessman Moshood Abiola won the election, but the military government led by General Ibrahim Babangida later cancelled the results.
This year’s event will also include goodwill messages from former leaders of the National Assembly. President Tinubu will present national honours to some selected lawmakers.
The House said the joint sitting marks a key moment in Nigeria’s democracy. “It underscores the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule,” it said.
The House urged Nigerians to use Democracy Day to reflect on the country’s progress and renew their commitment to unity and nation-building.
