Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, has announced the introduction of 20 new academic programmes, designed to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving global job market.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, made this announcement during a press conference on Thursday ahead of the university’s 34th convocation ceremony, scheduled for next week.
The new courses include cutting-edge programmes such as Cyber Security, Forensic Science, Data Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Estate Management, Building Technology, and Software Engineering, among others. Prof. Agboola explained that these additions align with global trends and will enhance the institution’s academic offerings.
“These new programmes are designed to position OOU as a leader in higher education, ensuring our students are prepared for the demands of the global job market,” Agboola stated.
As the university prepares for the convocation, Prof. Agboola revealed that a total of 6,209 undergraduate students will graduate this year, including 5,793 regular students and 416 part-time students. Additionally, 741 postgraduate students will receive diplomas and higher degrees, with 571 earning Postgraduate Diplomas and Master’s Degrees, and 170 earning Doctorates (PhDs).
Highlighting the academic achievements, the Vice-Chancellor announced that 115 undergraduates graduated with first-class honours, a feat that underscores the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.
“A total of 115 students earned first-class degrees, while 1,845 achieved Second Class Upper Division, 3,044 graduated in Second Class Lower Division, 688 finished with Third Class, and 35 had Pass grades. Additionally, 66 students from our medical programmes graduated as unclassified,” Agboola explained.

Among the graduating students, Dauda Anuoluwapo, from the Economics Department, emerged as the overall best graduating student with an impressive Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.87. Praising Dauda’s hard work and dedication, Prof. Agboola said the university is proud of such outstanding academic performance.
As part of the convocation activities, a lecture themed “TETFund and Educational Development in Nigeria: The History, the Treasures, and the Future” will be delivered by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono. Prof. Agboola emphasized the importance of the lecture, noting that it will provide valuable insights into the role of TETFund in advancing Nigeria’s educational sector.
With the introduction of these 20 new programmes and the recognition of its high-performing students, OOU is poised to continue its tradition of academic excellence and innovation.
“We remain committed to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with the skills needed to make meaningful contributions to society,” Agboola affirmed.
