Mudashiru Obasa has reclaimed his position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down from the role on Monday.
Obasa was reinstated during a plenary session, ending weeks of leadership turmoil in the state legislature.
From Impeachment to Reinstatement
In January, lawmakers impeached Obasa over allegations of poor leadership, abuse of office, frequent lateness to plenary sessions, and intimidation of colleagues. The decision was backed by more than 90 percent of the Assembly members.
However, Obasa rejected his impeachment, claiming it did not follow the constitutional process.
“I believe strongly that I am still the Speaker until the right thing is done. If you want to remove me, do it the proper way, and I will not contest it,” he said at the time.
He also denied allegations of corruption, calling the accusations of financial misappropriation “impossible.”

High-Level Intervention
As tensions escalated, top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, stepped in to mediate on the directive of President Bola Tinubu.
Following a reconciliation meeting, Meranda, along with other key principal officers, resigned to pave the way for Obasa’s return.
“This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Meranda announced during the plenary session.
Obasa’s Speech and Call for Unity
With his reinstatement, Obasa expressed gratitude to his colleagues and urged them to work together in unity.
“We want to assure Lagosians that we are determined to serve and protect their interests always,” he said.
He described the Assembly as a body with strong internal mechanisms to resolve disputes, adding, “What is happening here today shows that the Lagos State House of Assembly is capable and a House of integrity.”
He further assured lawmakers and Lagos residents that peace and cooperation would define the Assembly moving forward.
“Today is not for speeches but for celebration. I thank my colleagues for all they have done. I am sure we will continue to work together in peace, love, and harmony,” Obasa said.
