Mudashiru Obasa, the embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has declared that he remains the Speaker despite his recent impeachment by the Assembly. Obasa made this statement on Saturday at his residence in Joel Ogunnaike, GRA Ikeja, where he was welcomed by his loyal supporters.
Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, followed allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Lawmakers in the Assembly unanimously voted to remove him during a plenary session. His removal also came after accusations surfaced that he had spent a staggering ₦17 billion on a gate for the Assembly complex, further fueling controversy around his leadership.
Despite these developments, Obasa maintained that he has not been lawfully removed.
Speaking to journalists after addressing his supporters, he asserted, “My status in the house? I believe strongly I am still the Speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way, and I will not contest it.”
He added, “I’m a Muslim, and I believe in fate. But let’s do it the way it should be done.”
Obasa, who had been Speaker since 2015, was greeted with cheers and solidarity by his loyalists. Many of them expressed their belief in his leadership and accused the Assembly of mishandling the impeachment process.

A supporter, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “This is not the way to treat a leader who has served Lagos State with dedication for years. The process was rushed and unfair.”
When asked if he would take legal action against the Assembly, Obasa gave a cryptic response, saying, “You will know. It’s a matter of time. Thank you, and God bless you.”
His statement has fueled speculation that he may challenge his impeachment in court, potentially dragging the issue into a prolonged legal battle.
Obasa’s impeachment has been one of the most talked-about political developments in Lagos State. Critics have questioned the transparency of the ₦17 billion expenditure on the Assembly’s gate, with many calling for a thorough investigation.
