Nigeria has reached a major milestone in crude oil production, increasing output to 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd), a development that is expected to boost government revenue from the oil and gas sector. This announcement was made by Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), during a meeting at the NNPC headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting, which took place in the Oil Production War Room on Thursday, was chaired by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri. Key attendees included NNPC Board Chairman Chief Pius Akinyelure, NNPC CFO Mr. Adedapo Segun, and other top executives, underscoring the importance of the occasion.
Kyari highlighted the significance of this achievement, noting that it reflects the hard work and dedication of the NNPC team and their partners.
“Today, we have reached 1.8 million barrels per day, which is a great milestone for us and the entire industry. This achievement is a testament to the collaboration and alignment with our partners, security agencies, and local communities,” he stated.
The NNPCL’s crude oil production has seen steady growth since the company intensified efforts to boost output. Lawal Musa, Chief Production War Room Officer, noted that production levels had risen from 1.43 million bpd on June 25 to over 1.7 million bpd by mid-August, in line with the presidential mandate to increase production.
“Crossing the 1.8 million barrels per day mark before the end of the year is a great achievement. We are now focused on reaching 2 million barrels per day, and we believe this is achievable through continued collaboration and strengthened security measures,” Musa said.

The company also reported progress in gas production, achieving 7.4 billion standard cubic feet (BSCF) of gas, up from 6.1 BSCF earlier in the year. This increase is expected to power key gas infrastructure projects, including the AKK pipeline, and further solidify Nigeria’s position in the global energy market.
Minister Lokpobiri praised NNPCL’s leadership and expressed optimism about the future.
“Today, we celebrate crossing the 1.8 million barrels per day mark and surpassing 7.4 BCF of gas production. This shows our commitment and potential to reach and even exceed 2 million barrels per day by the end of the year. This is a remarkable achievement, and I commend the entire NNPC team for their hard work,” he said.
NNPC Board Chairman Chief Pius Akinyelure echoed this sentiment, urging the management to sustain the momentum.
“This is just the beginning of greater achievements for NNPC Ltd. We must not rest on our laurels. There is more work to be done, and I have no doubt that the team will continue to exceed expectations,” he said.
