Nigerian banks have announced that customers will start paying more for SMS transaction alerts from May 1, 2025, following new telecom tariff changes.

Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) and Ecobank Nigeria both confirmed the increase in separate messages to their customers.

GTBank stated that the fee for SMS alerts will go up from ₦4 to ₦6 per message. The bank explained that the hike is due to higher telecommunication charges imposed by service providers.

“Dear Valued Customer,” the bank wrote, “Please be informed that effective Thursday, May 1 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from ₦4 to ₦6 per message.”

“This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers,” GTBank added.

Ecobank also announced that its SMS fee will rise from ₦5 to ₦6 per alert, starting the same day. The bank said the change was necessary because of the new pricing structure introduced by telecom companies.

The banks emphasized the importance of SMS alerts in helping customers monitor their account activity. However, GTBank said customers who prefer not to receive SMS alerts can opt out by updating their preferences on the bank’s website.

This increase comes at a time when rising inflation and operating costs are forcing several banks to adjust their service charges.
