The Nigerian Army has dismantled a Boko Haram sleeper cell in Taraba State, arresting eight suspected terrorists and two individuals accused of providing information to a notorious kidnapping gang. The operation was carried out by troops from the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke.

Captain Olubodunde Oni, the acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday in Jalingo. He explained that the raid took place on September 29, 2024, following credible intelligence that led the soldiers to the residence of a Boko Haram leader, Tukura Abdul-Kareem, in Sunkani Ward, Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Oni revealed that Abdul-Kareem, along with seven other suspects, was arrested during the raid. The suspects reportedly admitted to being Boko Haram members, with plans to set up a sleeper cell in the area.

“The suspects were planning to launch attacks using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on civilians and critical infrastructure in the state,” Oni said.

Abdul-Kareem also confessed to being involved in Boko Haram activities alongside his brother, Adamu Abdul-Kareem, who remains at large.

During the operation, soldiers recovered a number of items from the suspects, including nine mobile phones, identification cards, and controlled substances such as marijuana and other hard drugs.

In a separate operation on September 30, 2024, soldiers stationed in Chachanji village, Takum Local Government Area, arrested two women, Patience Tersoo and Joy Emmanuel. These women were suspected of providing information to a notorious kidnapping syndicate led by a criminal known as Anyogo. According to Oni, the women were believed to be Anyogo’s wife and sister. The troops recovered a mobile phone, a motorcycle, and a calabash from the suspects.

Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, the Commander of the 6 Brigade, commended the troops for their professionalism and swift action in thwarting the terrorist plot.

“Their efforts have ensured the safety of lives and prevented a major attack in the state,” Uwa stated.

He also acknowledged the cooperation of Taraba residents, saying their intelligence support was crucial in maintaining peace and security.

“Together, we will continue to ensure a safer and more secure Taraba and Nigeria at large,” he added.
