The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Katsina State has arrested a suspected cocaine trafficker attempting to cross into Niger Republic. The arrest was made along the Kano-Kankia road in Katsina on October 2, and it marked one of the early achievements of the state’s newly appointed NDLEA Commander, Mr. Mohammed Aminu-Abubakar.

Aminu-Abubakar, who took charge of the Katsina command last Friday, shared the news during his first briefing with journalists. He disclosed that officers intercepted around 0.642 kilograms of a substance believed to be cocaine from the suspect during a routine operation.

“The suspect is currently under investigation and will face prosecution in court once the investigation is complete,” he stated.

The arrest represents a significant step in the command’s effort to curb drug trafficking in the region, with Aminu-Abubakar emphasizing his dedication to tackling the drug trade. He expressed his determination to use all legal avenues to crack down on drug traffickers and dealers across Katsina State.

“We will employ all legal strategies available to ensure that drug traffickers and dealers face the law,” he added.

In addition to fighting drug trafficking, Aminu-Abubakar highlighted the command’s commitment to supporting those struggling with drug addiction. He noted that facilities are in place for the rehabilitation of drug users and encouraged individuals battling substance abuse to seek assistance.

He emphasized, “Substance abuse does not pay. We have resources to help those who are ready to turn their lives around.”

To further prevent drug abuse, Aminu-Abubakar called on residents of Katsina State to adopt drug test kits as a preventive measure. He suggested that these kits could be an effective tool for families and communities to reduce the demand for illicit drugs.

“By embracing drug test kits, we can take a proactive approach to curb drug demand and prevent substance abuse,” he urged.

Aminu-Abubakar also underscored the importance of collaboration with other security agencies, community leaders, and stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse. He pledged to work closely with these groups to reduce drug-related issues in Katsina communities.

The newly appointed commander brings experience from his previous role at the NDLEA Strategic Command at Tin-Can Island Port in Lagos, where he played a significant role in drug interdiction efforts. He replaces Mr. Hassan Sani, who has been reassigned to the NDLEA national headquarters.
