The Nigerian military has confirmed that eight vigilantes were killed in an ambush by armed bandits on Sunday, July 6, in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Special Task Force in charge of security in the state, known as Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), made the announcement in a statement released on Wednesday by its spokesman, Major Samson Zhakom.

Major Zhakom said the vigilantes were on an unapproved mission and did not inform security forces before entering the area.

“On July 6, 2025, a large group of vigilantes from Kanam LGA launched an independent operation without notifying OPSH troops,” Zhakom stated.

He explained that the vigilantes stopped at Kukawa community, where they reportedly clashed with residents.

“Reports indicate that they attacked civilians and looted several provision shops. They also seized over 20 motorcycles from residents,” the statement added.

While heading toward Odare Forest, the vigilantes were ambushed by bandits, leading to the deaths of eight of them. Some others are still missing.

“The remains of the deceased have been recovered and buried. Troops from OPSH Sector 2 in Wase are now searching for the missing men,” Zhakom said.

The military warned local vigilante groups against acting alone, saying such actions risk the lives of both the operatives and innocent civilians.

“OPSH strongly advises all vigilante groups and individuals not to carry out unauthorized operations. Independent actions without our approval are dangerous,” the statement said.

It added, “OPSH is committed to keeping peace in Plateau State and will act firmly against any person or group that disrupts security, no matter their intentions.”
