Meta Platforms Inc.

Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced plans to lay off employees based on performance reviews as part of its ongoing workforce restructuring. The move, disclosed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in an internal memo, is aimed at streamlining the company’s teams and focusing on building critical technologies for the future.

In the memo, which was shared on Meta’s internal Workplace forum and reported by Business Insider, Zuckerberg revealed that employees in the United States impacted by the layoffs will be notified on February 10, while those outside the U.S. will receive updates later.

Focus on Future Technologies

Zuckerberg emphasized the company’s strategic priorities, including advancements in artificial intelligence, next-generation computing platforms like smart glasses, and redefining the future of social media.

He described 2025 as a crucial year for achieving these goals, stating, “We need the best people on our teams to deliver on our ambitious roadmap.”

To align with these priorities, Zuckerberg announced a shift in the company’s performance management approach.

“I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and move low performers out more quickly,” he explained.

Unlike previous years, when underperforming employees were managed out gradually, the company will now implement more immediate, performance-based terminations during this cycle.

Severance and Support for Laid-Off Employees

While some employees under review may retain their positions if they show potential for improvement, those let go will receive substantial severance packages.

“Letting people go is never easy. But I’m confident this will strengthen our teams and help us build leading technology to enable the future of human connection,” Zuckerberg acknowledged.

The company did not disclose the exact number of employees affected in this round of layoffs.

A Pattern of Workforce Reductions

The upcoming cuts are the latest in a series of layoffs at Meta. In October, the company carried out its most recent round of terminations. Earlier in 2023, 10,000 employees were laid off, following the dismissal of 11,000 workers in 2022.

These actions are part of Zuckerberg’s broader strategy to transform Meta into a leaner organization capable of competing in rapidly evolving tech industries.

“We’re making these difficult decisions to ensure Meta is well-positioned for long-term success,” he said in the memo.
