Mojisola Meranda has been re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, just hours after resigning as Speaker on Monday.
Meranda, who stepped down from the top leadership position during a special plenary session, pledged to continue serving Lagos State in good faith.
“I remain committed to the progress of Lagos and will continue to serve in any capacity required,” she stated after her re-election.
Rapid Leadership Reshuffle
Following Meranda’s resignation, the Assembly wasted no time in restructuring its leadership. Lawmakers swiftly reconstituted key positions, bringing back familiar faces.
Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached in January, was nominated to return as Speaker.
David Setonji was reinstated as Deputy Chief Whip, Richard Kasumu was named Deputy Majority Leader, Adewale Temitope became Majority Leader, and Mojeed Fatai took on the role of Chief Whip.
The quick restructuring was seen as part of efforts to restore stability to the House following weeks of leadership crisis.

Meranda’s Short-Lived Speakership
Meranda initially became Speaker on January 13, 2025, after Obasa was impeached. His removal came after 32 out of 40 lawmakers accused him of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and authoritarian leadership.
Despite the overwhelming support for his impeachment, Obasa rejected the process, arguing that due procedure was not followed. He also denied the allegations against him.
With his reinstatement as Speaker and Meranda’s return as Deputy Speaker, the Assembly appears to have reached a resolution to the leadership crisis that had disrupted its operations.
