Former Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic has retired from football at the age of 37. He announced his decision on Monday in an emotional message posted on social media.
“Football, you gave me more than I ever dreamed of. You gave me friends, emotions, joy and tears. Now it’s time to say goodbye. Because even if I walk away from you, I know you’ll never walk away from me. Thank you, football. For everything,” Rakitic wrote.
Rakitic had a long and successful career. He played for top European clubs, including Barcelona and Sevilla. He helped Barcelona win the Champions League, Spanish league, and Spanish Cup in 2015. He also won the Europa League twice with Sevilla.

Rakitic started his professional career at Swiss club Basel. He later moved to Schalke in Germany before joining Sevilla and then Barcelona.
He played 106 matches for the Croatian national team. One of the highlights of his career was helping Croatia reach the 2018 World Cup final, where they lost to France.
After leaving European football, Rakitic played briefly in Saudi Arabia with Al Shabab. He ended his career with a final season at Hajduk Split in Croatia.
Rakitic leaves the game as one of Croatia’s most respected players.
