Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya

The Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe, Gombe State, has issued a ban on its staff members trading or mining cryptocurrency during work hours. This decision comes after a series of complaints from patients and their relatives about staff being distracted by these activities, which impacted their primary duties.

The ban was announced in a circular dated September 18, 2024, signed by the hospital’s Deputy Director of Administration, Adamu Tela. A copy of the circular was obtained by our correspondent on Friday, and it has since gained widespread attention.

In the statement, Tela emphasized the need for staff to refrain from engaging in cryptocurrency activities while on duty.

He noted, “I am directed to caution all members of staff to desist from mining and all forms of related crypto trading activities while working.”

This decision was made to ensure that hospital employees remain focused on their responsibilities, particularly in a healthcare environment where patient care should be the priority.

The rise of cryptocurrency trading in Nigeria has become a popular trend, with many people across various age groups participating in mining opportunities like Not Coin and Dawg through platforms like Telegram.

While this has proven to be a source of income for many, the hospital management expressed concern over its effect on staff productivity.

“The warning became necessary due to a series of complaints received from patients and their relatives on how the trading activities distract staff members from performing their primary assignment while at their duty post,” Tela added.

To enforce the ban, the hospital management has put measures in place to monitor staff and ensure compliance.

Tela further stated, “Consequent upon this, I am further directed to inform all members of staff that the management will not hesitate to take drastic action in accordance with Public Service Rule against any staff that is caught engaging in such trading while working.”

The hospital has deployed officers from SERVICOM, ACTU, and security personnel to monitor staff behavior during work hours and ensure that no one violates the directive. Tela also urged staff to remain focused on their duties, stating that the hospital will take strict action against those who disregard the rule.
