Former Nigerian goalkeeper, Dosu Joseph, has narrowly escaped death after being involved in a serious car accident on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. The incident occurred at Kara, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when a heavy-duty truck crashed into his SUV.
Dosu, who led Nigeria to victory in the Men’s Football Tournament at the 1996 Olympics, shared details of the terrifying accident on his social media.
“To God be the glory, another death escaped by the grace and mercy of God,” the 51-year-old wrote, expressing his gratitude for surviving the ordeal.
He explained that the accident happened around 6 p.m. while he and a friend were refueling at a filling station near Ojodu Berger.
“We were at Enyo Filling Station after Ojodu Berger bus stop to get fuel when this MACK truck, fully loaded with iron, left the road and crushed my car beyond repairs,” he revealed, adding, “Thank God for life.”
This is not the first time Dosu has faced a life-threatening car accident. In 1997, a year after his Olympic success, he was involved in another devastating accident along Ikorodu Road in Lagos. That accident ended his football career at the age of 23 and left him with severe spinal injuries.

Despite these challenges, Dosu remained positive, thankful for his survival yet again. He confirmed that the latest accident had been reported to the Isheri Police Station in Ogun State, where the truck driver is currently being held, and the vehicle has been seized. However, Dosu mentioned that the truck’s owner stated they would not be able to fix his badly damaged SUV until after a year.
Dosu Joseph’s resilience has become a hallmark of his life, as he continues to survive against the odds. Known for his contributions to Nigerian football, he not only helped Julius Berger FC win the Nigeria FA Cup but also left a lasting legacy with his Olympic triumph in 1996.
