Former Belgian international footballer Radja Nainggolan was arrested on Monday in connection with an investigation into cocaine trafficking through the port of Antwerp, according to the Brussels prosecutor’s office.
Police conducted a series of morning raids across Belgium, detaining Nainggolan, 36, and several other suspects. The investigation focuses on the importation of cocaine from South America to Europe and its subsequent distribution in Belgium.
“The investigation concerns alleged facts of importation of cocaine from South America to Europe, via the port of Antwerp, and its redistribution in Belgium,” prosecutors stated.
Further details about Nainggolan’s alleged involvement in the case were not disclosed.
From Football Stardom to Controversy
Nainggolan, born in Antwerp, recently came out of retirement to play for Belgian second-tier club Lokeren, marking the latest chapter in a career spanning two decades. He had been without a club since last summer but made an impressive debut for Lokeren over the weekend, scoring in a 1-1 draw against K. Lierse.
His arrest comes just days after this comeback, leaving fans and the football community shocked.
