At least five people were injured, and two cows were killed in separate accidents in Lagos State on Sunday, prompting renewed warnings about road safety. The accidents occurred on the Ifako Bridge in the Ogudu area and the Iyana-Oworo section of the city, involving both human and animal casualties.
The first crash, which happened around 10:30 a.m., involved a commercial Mazda bus and a minibus on Ifako Bridge. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the driver of the Mazda bus lost control of the vehicle due to a combination of eating while driving and brake failure, leading to a collision with the minibus.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the Mazda bus, distracted by eating, lost concentration and control of the vehicle. This was further worsened by a sudden brake failure. As a result, the bus crashed into a minibus, leaving five people injured,” Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, said in a statement.
According to Taofiq, the injured victims included one man and four women. They were rescued by LASTMA officials and taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for treatment.

In another accident on the same day, a herd of cattle on the highway caused a collision in the Iyana-Oworo area. An Acura SUV hit two cows while the animals were crossing the road, killing the cattle and damaging the vehicle.
Taofiq explained the circumstances of the second crash: “The accident occurred today at Iyana-Oworo when a herd of cattle was crossing the highway. Unfortunately, the SUV couldn’t avoid the cows, resulting in their deaths and serious damage to the vehicle.”
Reacting to the incidents, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over dangerous driving practices and urged motorists to remain vigilant on the roads.
“We strongly urge all motorists, especially commercial bus drivers, to prioritize safety. These accidents highlight the need for drivers to avoid distractions and be alert at all times,” Bakare-Oki said.
This warning comes after a similar fatal accident was reported on September 18, when a minibus driver crashed into a stationary truck in the CMS area of Lagos, killing the truck driver.
