The Federal Government has refuted the claims that it is holding discussions with foreign countries to allow the siting of foreign military bases in Nigeria after the government of the republic of Niger had ordered the United States to relocate its military base.
Since after the exit of the U.S. military base in Niger Republic, there have been calls from prominent Nigerians including the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega thst the federal government should not allow any foreign country to site its military base in Nigeria.
However, some Nigerians have alleged that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is holding diplomatic discussions with foreign countries that may culminate into siting of a foreign military base in Nigeria.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, refuted this claim on Monday May 6, 2024, in a press statement.
Idris said, “The Federal Government is aware of false alarms being raised in some quarters alleging discussions between the Federal Government of Nigeria and some foreign countries on the siting of foreign military bases in the country.
“We urge the general public to totally disregard this falsehood.
“The Federal Government is not in any such discussion with any foreign country. We have neither received nor are we considering any proposals from any country on the establishment of any foreign military bases in Nigeria.
“The Nigerian government already enjoys foreign cooperation in tackling ongoing security challenges, and the President remains committed to deepening these partnerships, with the goal of achieving the national security objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
