The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Monday Okungbowa, popularly known as Ebo Stone, over allegations of naira abuse. Okungbowa, who was recently suspended as the coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team, was taken into custody by the EFCC’s Benin zonal directorate.
The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Monday. He explained that Okungbowa was caught after a viral video showed him spraying and mutilating the naira at a bar on March 9, 2025.
Oyewale stated, “The EFCC has arrested Kelly Okungbowa (a.k.a. Ebo Stone) for alleged naira abuse. Okungbowa, who until recently served as the coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) before his suspension by the state government, was arrested after a video surfaced online showing him spraying and defacing the naira.”

The EFCC emphasized that the act of spraying and defacing the naira is a violation of the law. The anti-graft agency has recently intensified its crackdown on individuals who mishandle the national currency in public events.
Oyewale added that Okungbowa will face prosecution once investigations are completed. “He will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” he stated.
The arrest of Okungbowa comes amid growing concerns about naira abuse at social gatherings. The EFCC has repeatedly warned that anyone caught defacing the national currency will face legal consequences.
