Four Chinese and 104 Nigerians

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested four Chinese nationals and 104 Nigerians in connection with an alleged internet fraud scheme in Abuja. The arrests occurred in a business apartment in the Gudu area of the Federal Capital Territory as part of the agency’s intensified campaign against cybercrime and corruption.

In a statement released on Friday, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that the suspects were apprehended on Thursday. He described the operation as a significant step in the agency’s efforts to rid Nigeria of fraudulent activities.

“The suspects, comprising 67 males—including four Chinese nationals—and 38 females, were allegedly involved in a hotel review job scam. The scam targeted victims and hotels in Europe and other parts of the world,” Oyewale said.

The EFCC disclosed that the suspects are currently in custody and will face charges upon the completion of investigations.

Crackdown on Internet Fraud

This latest operation highlights the EFCC’s ongoing commitment to combating internet fraud, a crime that has tarnished Nigeria’s international reputation. The agency has recently ramped up efforts to track down individuals and groups involved in various forms of cybercrime, including scams targeting individuals, businesses, and institutions worldwide.

Oyewale emphasized that the EFCC will continue to clamp down on perpetrators of internet fraud to restore the country’s image. He urged Nigerians to support the fight against corruption by reporting suspicious activities to the commission.

Mixed Reactions from the Public

The arrests have sparked mixed reactions, with many Nigerians expressing support for the EFCC’s actions.

“This is a welcome development. Cybercrime affects everyone, and it’s good to see the government taking action,” said Grace Okoro, a resident of Abuja.

However, others called for transparency and thorough investigations to ensure that innocent people are not wrongfully implicated.

“The EFCC must ensure they have solid evidence against these suspects before taking them to court,” commented Musa Abdullahi, a lawyer in Abuja.
