Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, founder of MedContour Services Ltd

The Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, founder of MedContour Services Ltd., for her role in a failed plastic surgery that resulted in the death of Nneka Onwuzuligbo in 2020.

Justice Mohammed Liman, who presided over the case, sentenced Dr. Adepoju to a one-year jail term. However, she has the option to pay a ₦100,000 fine instead of serving the jail time.

Babatunde Irukera, former Director-General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), led the prosecution. Expressing satisfaction with the verdict, Irukera stated on his X handle that, “Today is a day of pride for me that I personally prosecuted Anu Adepoju and her medical practice. Though I’ve left, the case has ended in a conviction strengthening the accountability framework for all in society, professionals or otherwise.”

He emphasized the importance of accountability, saying, “The wheel of justice may grind slowly, but we must see it through.”

In 2020, Nneka Onwuzuligbo sought cosmetic surgery at MedContour Services Ltd., aiming to enhance her appearance. The surgery, performed by Dr. Adepoju, led to severe complications and ultimately resulted in Onwuzuligbo’s death. This incident sparked widespread outrage and raised concerns about the standards and practices within Nigeria’s cosmetic surgery industry.

MedContour, a Lagos-based clinic known for its body enhancement procedures, had garnered significant attention, especially on social media. Despite its popularity, the FCCPC received numerous complaints about the safety and quality of MedContour’s services. The commission accused Dr. Adepoju of professional misconduct and obstructing their investigation by refusing to honor summonses and failing to provide necessary documents.

Following an investigation, the FCCPC found multiple irregularities and breaches of professional conduct at MedContour, leading to legal action against Dr. Adepoju. The court’s ruling marks a significant step in holding medical professionals accountable and ensuring the safety of cosmetic surgery practices in Nigeria.

Dr. Adepoju, often referred to as Dr. Anu, had risen to prominence through social media, where she showcased her work and attracted a large following. However, her career has been marred by controversies and complaints about her professional conduct.

The conviction of Dr. Adepoju highlights the need for stringent regulations and oversight in the cosmetic surgery industry to protect consumers and uphold professional standards.
