Cholera Outbreak in Yola Claims Four Lives, 36 Hospitalized

A suspected cholera outbreak has claimed four lives and left 36 others hospitalized in Yola-North Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The Executive Chairman of the council, Mr. Jibrin Ibrahim, confirmed the outbreak, revealing that it had affected the Alkalawa, Ajiya, and Limawa wards of the council.

Ibrahim made the announcement on Sunday during a visit to the victims being treated at the Infectious Disease Control Centre (IDC) in Yola. He reported that the initial number of recorded cases was 20 but had since risen to 40, with four fatalities.

“The situation escalated quickly, but thanks to the prompt actions of health workers and the support from the Red Cross and international partners, many of the patients have stabilized and are receiving the necessary treatment,” Ibrahim said. He praised the rapid response of medical personnel, which has been critical in managing the outbreak and minimizing further casualties.

The chairman explained that the suspected cause of the outbreak is likely due to contaminated water sources, which have been worsened by recent flooding in the area. “We believe the cholera outbreak is connected to the use of contaminated water. This is a serious issue, especially following the floods in some parts of the council,” he added.

In light of the outbreak, Ibrahim urged residents to prioritize cleanliness and take preventive measures. “People must be vigilant about their hygiene. It is important to drink only clean, potable water and to thoroughly wash vegetables and fruits before consumption. These steps can help prevent the spread of this deadly disease,” he emphasized.

Health authorities in Yola have mobilized resources to contain the spread of the infection and are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
