The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested two Chinese nationals, Wang Jiang and Wang Richard, along with two Nigerians, Donatus Agupusi and Michael Agu, for allegedly trying to export solid minerals without obtaining the necessary permits. The arrests occurred following a tip-off from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on November 3, 2024.

The EFCC stated that Jiang was caught during a security check at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. Security personnel discovered three packages of stones, believed to be solid minerals, in his luggage as he attempted to board a flight to China.

Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, said, “Jiang claimed he was traveling to China to test the minerals, but there were no permits for their export.”

Further investigations revealed that Donatus Agupusi, owner of Great Wall Construction Limited, was the employer of the suspects. Neither Agupusi nor the other suspects possessed the required authorizations to export minerals, which are strictly regulated in Nigeria.

Speaking on the arrests, Oyewale confirmed, “Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC have arrested two Chinese siblings: Wang Jiang and Wang Richard, for allegedly making efforts to export solid minerals without a requisite permit. Their arrest was based on intelligence received from FAAN.”

He added, “Jiang was intercepted at the hold baggage screening point, where unidentified stones believed to be solid minerals wrapped in three packages were found in his luggage.”

The EFCC emphasized that thorough investigations are underway, and the suspects will face prosecution once all findings are complete. The commission reiterated its commitment to upholding Nigeria’s laws regarding natural resources and warned against illegal activities in the sector.

The arrest highlights ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining and export of solid minerals, which have significant implications for Nigeria’s economy. The EFCC continues to collaborate with other agencies to prevent unauthorized activities in the mining sector and ensure compliance with regulations.
