Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has apologised to fans and team-mates after being sent off in the early minutes of their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The Spaniard was shown a red card in the fifth minute for fouling Bryan Mbeumo just outside the penalty area. The challenge denied a clear goalscoring chance and left Chelsea playing with 10 men for almost the entire match.
After the game, Sanchez took responsibility for the loss. Writing on Instagram, he said: “On me today guys, big sorry for that, team put a massive effort in the second half but couldn’t get there.”

The red card made Sanchez the earliest Chelsea player ever to be sent off in a Premier League match. Only two goalkeepers in the league’s history have been dismissed earlier.
Referee Peter Bankes’ decision means Sanchez will serve a one-match suspension. He will miss Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Lincoln City but is expected to return for next weekend’s Premier League fixture against his former club, Brighton.
