The former President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari buried in his residence in Daura

Former President Muhammadu Buhari was buried on Tuesday, July 15, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. The burial followed Islamic rites and brought together leaders from across Nigeria and beyond.

Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a hospital in London at the age of 82, after a long illness. His body arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday morning aboard a Nigerian Air Force plane. Vice President Kashim Shettima and other top government officials accompanied the remains to Katsina.

President Bola Tinubu received the body at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport. From there, a helicopter carried the casket, wrapped in Nigeria’s green and white colours, to Daura.

A large crowd lined the streets to catch a final glimpse of the former leader. His funeral prayer was held at 5:50 p.m. and led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, the Imam of the Daura Central Mosque.

Military officers carried Buhari’s body on a stretcher and honoured him with a 21-gun salute before he was laid to rest at his private residence. Only close family, friends, and Islamic clerics were allowed at the burial site.

President Tinubu, state governors, former presidents, and senior officials were all present to pay their last respects.

The federal government declared Tuesday a public holiday to honour Buhari, giving Nigerians the opportunity to mourn and participate in the funeral.

In Daura, thousands of people, including neighbours and well-wishers, gathered in sorrow to bid farewell to a man they saw as a symbol of honesty and discipline.

Ismaila Ibrahim, one of Buhari’s neighbours, said, “He was humble and disciplined till the end. For over 50 years, we lived peacefully together here in Daura.”

People from all walks of life, including world leaders, have sent their tributes, describing Buhari as a patriot who devoted his life to the service of Nigeria.

Mourners continued to visit the late president’s home to console his family and offer prayers.
