Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai have teamed up to launch a new political party called the All Democratic Alliance (ADA). The group has formally applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the party’s registration.

In a letter dated June 19 and received by INEC on Friday, the coalition made clear its intention to create a brand-new platform rather than join any existing party.

The letter was signed by Chief Akin A. Rickets, the coalition’s Protem National Chairman, and Abdullahi Elayo, the Protem National Secretary.

The letter read, “We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission, requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance, as a political party.

“This is a sequel to the decision taken by the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor our association for full registration.”

The new party’s slogan will be “Justice for All,” and it will use ADA as its acronym. Its symbol is a maize plant, chosen to represent abundance, strength, and hope.

The party is backed by other influential political figures, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Umar Ardo, a former aide to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and leader of the League of Northern Democrats.

The move comes at a time when many Nigerians are expressing frustration with the current government. The ADA aims to provide a strong alternative to President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the next general elections.

The coalition also submitted its constitution, manifesto, logo, and minutes from earlier meetings to meet INEC’s requirements.

INEC had earlier warned that no political group will bypass the proper registration process, no matter the level of public support or pressure. The commission said it will only approve parties that follow all legal and constitutional steps.
