Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party he helped to establish and once led as a presidential candidate.
Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general election, confirmed his exit in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025. The letter was addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State. His media aide, Abdul Rasheeth, shared the letter on social media platform X on Wednesday.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku stated in the letter.
Atiku’s decision comes as he joins efforts to form a new coalition party, the Alliance Democratic Congress, ahead of the 2027 general election.

In the letter, Atiku thanked the PDP for the roles he played while in the party.
“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he said.
He also expressed sadness about leaving the party he helped build.
“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he wrote.
However, Atiku explained that he could no longer continue with the PDP because the party had strayed from its original values.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” he said.
