The Anambra State Government has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of Mrs. Ogechukwu Okafor, allegedly killed by her husband, Pastor Elijah Okafor. The incident, which occurred on August 13, 2024, in the Nimo community of Njikoka Local Government Area, has sparked outrage and calls for justice.

The Anambra State Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare launched the probe after receiving a formal complaint from the deceased’s family. The family expressed deep suspicions about Pastor Elijah’s account of the events leading to Ogechukwu’s death.

According to a statement released by Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, media aide to the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, the complaint was brought forward by Mr. Samuel Onuorah, the deceased’s uncle. Onuorah explained that Pastor Elijah had informed the family that Ogechukwu died after falling from a four-storey building. However, the family grew suspicious and decided to investigate further.

“Mr. Onuorah, along with other family members, visited the mortuary where Ogechukwu’s body was deposited. There, they discovered that she had not fallen from any building, as her husband claimed. Instead, she had been brutally stabbed in the neck and chest,” the statement revealed.

The shocking revelation prompted the family to seek justice through the state government.

Mr. Onuorah emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating, “We want the truth to be uncovered. Our daughter did not fall; she was murdered. We demand justice for Ogechukwu.”

In response to the family’s plea, Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, Ify Obinabo, called on all stakeholders, women’s groups, human rights activists, and social media users to unite in demanding justice for the deceased. She assured the public that the state government would conduct a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth.

“We will not rest until justice is served. This case will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law, and we will ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” Commissioner Obinabo vowed.

Obinabo also stated that she would bring the matter to the attention of the state governor, further emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring justice in this tragic case.
