Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He made the announcement on Friday at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital.
The governor said his decision came after “three months of wide consultation” with important leaders across the state.
“I have therefore decided to progressively move to the APC. We are joining the APC today in the state’s interest and because of our admiration and respect for President Tinubu, and to support Senate President Godswill Akpabio,” Eno said.
The governor also thanked the PDP for the support they gave him during his time in office, but said it was time for a new direction.
He added, “We are not joining the APC from a position of weakness but from a position of strength. We are joining the APC to align our state with the center.”

Governor Eno promised to continue working hard for the people of Akwa Ibom, saying political party differences would not stop him from serving the state.
Top APC leaders and governors attended the event to show support. They included Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who is also the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos; Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun; Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta; Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi; Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo; and Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River, among others.
Governor Eno’s defection is expected to shake up the political landscape in Akwa Ibom as the state aligns more closely with the APC-led federal government.
