The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed 19 senior police officers and demoted 19 others for various acts of misconduct. Among those dismissed are 10 Assistant Superintendents, six Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent.
The commission also reduced the ranks of other officers, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, a Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents, and 13 Assistant Superintendents.
PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani announced the decisions on Friday, noting that the disciplinary measures were finalized during the commission’s recent plenary session in Abuja.
“Most of the officers dismissed are also to be prosecuted by the Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force,” Ani stated. “The commission also considered 23 appeals and petitions and nine legal matters or court judgments during the session.”
In addition to dismissals and demotions, two Assistant Inspectors General of Police faced disciplinary action. One received a reprimand for refusing to carry out lawful instructions, while the other was issued a letter of warning for negligence.

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, emphasized the importance of handling disciplinary matters swiftly to ensure accountability within the police force.
“The Commission will henceforth consider police disciplinary matters with dispatch,” Argungu said. “This will allow officers who are not found wanting to continue with their career progression while those found culpable serve their punishments.”
During the plenary, the commission reviewed 110 pending disciplinary cases, 23 appeals and petitions, and 13 court judgments seeking compliance. Three disciplinary cases were put on hold pending further information from the Inspector General of Police.
The PSC’s actions reflect ongoing efforts to maintain discipline and accountability in the Nigeria Police Force while ensuring officers adhere to professional and ethical standards.
