The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened an emergency meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, aiming to address growing tensions and leadership issues. The meeting, led by BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, called for unity within the party and adherence to its constitution amid concerns over postponed meetings and internal discord.
During his address, Wabara expressed disappointment at the National Working Committee’s (NWC) repeated delays in convening the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, a critical platform for decision-making and party unity.
“It is with a deep sense of disappointment that I must express the Board’s dismay at the continued shifting by the NWC in convening a NEC meeting,” Wabara said. He warned that such delays breach trust and risk further division within the party.
He urged the NWC to demonstrate leadership by ensuring that the next NEC meeting, scheduled for February 2024, proceeds as planned. “We expect that the NWC would honour its word and convene the NEC meeting as scheduled,” he added.
Wabara also announced plans to revisit discussions with former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike in the new year as part of efforts to mend fences and foster peace within the party. This comes after lingering tensions between Wike and other PDP leaders following disagreements during the 2023 elections.
“The strength of our party lies in unity,” Wabara emphasized, urging PDP governors and leaders to prioritize collaboration over personal ambitions. “We cannot afford to let personal differences overshadow our shared vision for a better Nigeria.”
The meeting also touched on the current economic situation in Nigeria. Wabara criticized what he described as “hard economic policies” that have led to widespread suffering.
“The skyrocketing cost of living, coupled with poorly implemented economic reforms, has pushed millions into deeper poverty,” he said, calling on the PDP to present credible alternatives and stand as a voice for the struggling populace.

Wabara urged the party to take a proactive role in addressing the nation’s challenges. “Nigerians are looking to us for leadership and hope. We must not fail them,” he remarked.
The emergency meeting underscored the urgent need for the PDP to resolve internal disputes, rebuild trust among its members, and reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles. As the party prepares for future elections, leaders are rallying around the importance of unity and accountability to strengthen the party’s position as a credible alternative for governance in Nigeria.
With plans for reconciliation, adherence to its constitution, and a focus on national issues, the PDP is at a pivotal moment to redefine its role in Nigeria’s political landscape.
