The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Hassan Kukah, has voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, stating they could help curb financial recklessness among Nigeria’s elite. Kukah shared his views during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, describing the reforms as a significant step towards better fiscal management and national development.
Bishop Kukah emphasized the importance of the tax reforms in addressing the long-standing issue of resource mismanagement in Nigeria. He expressed optimism about the potential impact of the bills, despite the widespread criticism they have faced.
“I am excited because this conversation offers an opportunity to address and end financial recklessness,” Kukah said. “It is ironic that Nigerians, despite living in a richly endowed country, find themselves spectators to the rascality and irresponsibility of the elite who mismanage our resources.”
He added, “These reforms should help transform the narrative and ensure the efficient management of our resources. I am hopeful that this marks the beginning of a long journey towards fiscal responsibility and the development of the nation we all aspire to build.”
The proposed tax reforms, introduced by Tinubu’s administration to the National Assembly, have stirred significant controversy. Critics include prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal. State governors and lawmakers have also voiced concerns about the potential implications of the bills.

Despite the opposition, Kukah remains confident in their necessity. He believes the reforms could create structures to harness Nigeria’s energy and talent for progress. “Nigeria is a very energetic country with people who are exceptionally gifted and always ready to excel,” he said. “However, our challenge lies in the inability of states to create platforms that harness the energy, vision, and competing narratives of their citizens. This lack of structure often results in violence.”
The tax reform bills aim to address Nigeria’s fiscal challenges by introducing measures to improve tax collection, reduce inefficiencies, and ensure better use of public funds. Tinubu’s administration has presented the reforms as a critical step in rebuilding the economy and addressing the financial strain caused by years of mismanagement.
While the road to implementing these reforms may be challenging, Kukah’s endorsement highlights the hope that they could mark a turning point for Nigeria. “Effective reforms are essential to set Nigeria on a path to sustainable progress,” he said.
