The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended two of its ministers, Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa, following allegations of homosexuality that surfaced online. These allegations went viral after a blog, Gistlover, named several prominent Nigerians allegedly involved in same-sex activities, sparking intense discussions on social media.
An internal memo from RCCG, dated October 28, 2024, detailed the church’s response, signed by RCCG’s National Overseer, Pastor Sunday Akande. The memo, titled “RCCG Suspends Two Pastors Amidst Homosexuality Allegations,” officially outlined the decision to temporarily relieve AdeBello and Mayowa of their duties while the church conducts an investigation.
Akande emphasized the church’s commitment to its biblical teachings, citing that the RCCG’s stance on homosexuality aligns with passages from Leviticus and 1 Corinthians. “Our mission is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible, and we must address these allegations with the seriousness they deserve,” he stated. For the RCCG, adhering to these principles is central to its values, Akande explained, and the church is determined to uphold them.
In his directive, Akande requested that the church’s Special Assistant to the General Overseer on Administration lead the investigation and ensure the process respects confidentiality for all involved. The investigation is expected to be concluded within two weeks. During this period, both suspended ministers have been instructed to refrain from church activities.
“This is a matter of integrity and adherence to our values,” Akande affirmed. The RCCG leadership stressed that the suspension is a temporary measure, allowing time for a fair and thorough inquiry.
Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello responded publicly on Instagram with a statement titled *“My Response to the Allegation of Sodomising Teenagers,”* categorically denying the accusations. “In the past few days, allegations have been made against me and others via a blog on social media known as Gistlover,” AdeBello wrote, explaining that he initially chose not to respond, believing that his inclusion in the blog might have been for engagement purposes. However, as the accusations have now escalated, he felt compelled to speak out.
“I have never engaged in such acts, whether for gratification or any other reason, and I have never trapped nor preyed on unsuspecting teenagers,” he declared. AdeBello further denied accusations that he demanded sexual favors from males as a form of payment or support, calling the claims unfounded and damaging. He also addressed a viral WhatsApp screenshot allegedly showing inappropriate discussions, clarifying that the context was manipulated.
“The screenshot was taken from a male teenagers’ WhatsApp group, where we discussed topics such as reproductive health, self-esteem, and personal hygiene,” AdeBello said, stressing that these discussions were purely educational and intended to support teenage boys’ growth and understanding. “We have covered a range of topics, including Bible studies, academics, and how to respect and relate to females. The male National Teens Executives can attest to these discussions.”
AdeBello condemned the social media post as an attempt to portray him as guilty of the accusations without context. “The instigators and accusers have used anonymity as their weapon of choice, attacking me from various quarters. I categorically affirm that I am innocent of the allegations against me,” he concluded.
The RCCG, one of Nigeria’s largest Christian denominations, has faced challenges before regarding adherence to its doctrinal principles. This investigation and how the church addresses these accusations may set a precedent for RCCG’s approach to similar situations in the future. With the investigation underway, RCCG leaders are hopeful that the matter will be resolved promptly, underscoring the church’s unwavering commitment to its foundational values.
