Fernando Vega, a father from Houston, is facing capital murder charges for the tragic deaths of his six-week-old twin daughters, Massail and Mirena. If convicted, he could face the death penalty, as reported by the Daily Mail UK. The charges stem from a distressing incident that took place on October 4, 2023, when the newborn twins were found lifeless in their home.
Initially, Vega was arrested on April 19, charged with causing serious bodily injury to a child. The twins’ mother, 21-year-old Angelina Belinda Calderon, faced similar charges. However, after further investigation, authorities determined that Vega was allegedly solely responsible for the deaths of the infants, leading to his charges being upgraded to two counts of capital murder.

Houston police discovered the tragic scene on October 4, finding the six-week-old girls unresponsive on a couch inside their home on Linden Creek Way. According to officers on the scene, the infants showed visible signs of abuse, including discolored skin, bruises on their bodies, and fractures on one of the twins.
Court documents further revealed that the twins had been discharged from the hospital without proper medical care and were suffering from malnutrition at the time of their deaths. A detailed examination by Dr. Jesus Rico, a pathologist at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science, confirmed these findings. Dr. Rico noted signs of dehydration, bruising, and multiple fractures, suggesting a history of abuse. He also found evidence of acute brain bleeding and spinal cord injuries in one of the twins, indicating recent trauma.
During a court hearing on Wednesday, prosecutor Edward Appelbaum emphasized the importance of thoroughly investigating the case before proceeding with finalizing the capital murder charges.
He stated, “We intend to leave no stone unturned as we seek justice for these young victims.”
