Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy has explained why he chooses not to give away millions of naira through online contests and giveaways, even though he can afford to do so. In a recent Instagram post, he admitted that while he could easily share his wealth, his reluctance stems from his feelings about social media users.
“I don’t even need most of the stuff I got. I could really give out millions of dollars right now. But I don’t like y’all,” Burna Boy wrote, highlighting his disdain for online audiences as the main reason behind his decision.
Burna Boy, known for his global hits and outspoken nature, has a reputation for keeping his charitable acts away from the spotlight. Although he does not participate in flashy online giveaways, he has made quiet contributions to those in need. His efforts include paying hospital bills for those unable to afford treatment, supporting students with educational expenses, and renovating orphanages to improve conditions for vulnerable children.
In an Instagram Live session, the “African Giant” artist further clarified his stance on charitable giving. He explained that he believes many of the people in genuine need of help are not actively present on social media, which is why he avoids making publicized donations online.
“I don’t chase clout with online giveaways. I think the people who really need help aren’t on social media,” Burna Boy shared during the live broadcast. He emphasized that he prefers to assist those in need through offline donations, ensuring that his contributions reach people and places that require support the most.

This approach contrasts with the trend among some celebrities who use social media to engage with fans through giveaways, often as a way to build their online following. Burna Boy’s perspective suggests a different philosophy about charity—one focused on impact rather than visibility.
Burna Boy’s statements have sparked reactions among fans and social media users, with some supporting his approach of making private donations, while others feel he could do more by engaging with his online audience. Nonetheless, the singer remains steadfast in his belief that helping those in need should not be about seeking attention or approval on social media platforms.
While Burna Boy’s approach might not align with the expectations of some fans, he continues to support his community in his own way, choosing to prioritize direct aid over social media fame.
