Tragedy struck in the Nibo community of Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, as about 15 people lost their lives in a violent attack on Sunday. The incident occurred during the Onwa Asaa traditional festival, a time when the community gathers to celebrate its cultural heritage.

Eyewitnesses reported that a group of suspected cultists, driving a Lexus SUV, stormed a local restaurant in Nibo, where many youths were enjoying drinks and meals. The attackers opened fire, causing chaos and leaving about 15 people dead. Describing the scene, an eyewitness called it “chaotic,” expressing shock over the violence that unfolded.

Although the motive behind the attack remains unclear, it is believed to be related to cult activities, according to initial reports. The restaurant where the incident occurred is located just a few meters from the Governor’s Lodge in the nearby Amawbia community, raising concerns about the level of security in the area.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the tragic event, labeling it a “cult-related clash.” SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has taken immediate steps to address the situation.

SP Ikenga noted, “The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash today, 20/10/2024, in Nibo, Awka South LG. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action.”

He further emphasized that the police are seeking cooperation from witnesses to help identify those responsible for the attack.

“Preliminary reports of the incident are still sketchy as the Command calls on the witnesses of this incident to volunteer information that will help to identify the perpetrators for possible arrest,” SP Ikenga added.

The Commissioner of Police assured that any information provided would be handled with strict confidentiality. He encouraged the public to reach out to the Command Control Room or directly contact the Police Public Relations Officer to aid in the investigation.

In response to the violence, a team of Anti-Crime Police has been deployed to the area to restore peace and ensure the safety of residents. The attack has left the community in shock and mourning, as families grapple with the loss of their loved ones during what was meant to be a festive occasion.
