The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Abdullahi Ganduje, may postpone the party’s inaugural National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting until 2025. Sources at the APC Secretariat cited the busy schedule and unavailability of President Bola Tinubu as reasons for the delay.
A party insider revealed, “As we speak, Mr. President is not back in the country. This was also the reason we had to annul the initial September dates we chose for the NEC meeting. But whichever way, the chances of holding a NEC meeting this year are no longer feasible. It is just two months until the end of the year. Again, we can’t fix it around the festive period in December. Perhaps in 2025, but 2024 is gone for sure.”
The discussions surrounding the NEC meeting’s delay come two months after the APC announced an indefinite postponement of its National Caucus and NEC meetings, initially scheduled for September 11 and 12. The party did not provide an official reason for the suspension. However, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka assured that new dates would be communicated in due time.
Our correspondent learned that President Tinubu’s absence from the country played a key role in the decision to call off the September meetings. Despite the anticipation, the party leadership remains uncertain about rescheduling the NEC meeting before the end of this year.
When reached for comment, Nze Chidi Duru, the APC’s National Deputy Organising Secretary, confirmed that no new date had been set. He stated, “No new date has been fixed. For us, we are not aware of any new date. As of now, the postponement still stands.”
The uncertainty was echoed by the APC’s National Legal Adviser, Abdulkareem Kana, who emphasized that the party cannot proceed without guidance from President Tinubu. “We can’t say when the next NEC meeting will be held. I am aware a new date has not been fixed. For us at APC, we can’t do anything until we get a new date from the President. He is expected back in the country any moment from his travel,” he explained.
