Swedish police are investigating Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe over allegations of rape, according to reports from Swedish media. The accusations emerged following Mbappe’s recent visit to Stockholm, but the footballer has strongly denied the claims, labeling them as “fake news.”
The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet first reported that an alleged rape incident had been filed with the police, though it did not initially name the suspect. However, another publication, Expressen, later identified 25-year-old Mbappe as the person under investigation.
“According to information obtained by Expressen, police are investigating the star who is reasonably suspected of rape and sexual assault,” the newspaper reported. Under Swedish law, “reasonable suspicion” is considered the lower threshold for suspicion in criminal investigations.
Mbappe’s representatives, when approached by the news agency AFP, stated that they had no knowledge of any legal complaint against the footballer. Meanwhile, the Swedish police have not confirmed further details about the case. Carina Skagerlind, a police spokeswoman, explained, “In general, if we have received a complaint and decided to conduct interviews and we make it known (to the public), those involved in the case may take actions that delay and complicate the investigation.”
The events reportedly took place during Mbappe’s visit to Stockholm last week. With France’s national team not selecting him for their latest Nations League matches, Mbappe traveled to the Swedish capital along with a group of friends. According to Aftonbladet, they dined at a restaurant before visiting a nightclub. The group then left Sweden the following day, on Friday. A complaint was filed with the police on Saturday, after the alleged victim sought medical attention, though the initial report did not specify who was accused.
Mbappe, however, dismissed the allegations in a social media post, suggesting that the timing of the accusations was suspicious. “FAKE NEWS !!!! It’s becoming so predictable, on the eve of the hearing, as if by chance,” Mbappe wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. He referred to his scheduled hearing before a French league committee, which relates to an ongoing dispute with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), over what he claims are unpaid wages.

In response to the accusations, Mbappe’s representatives issued a statement to AFP, condemning the reports from the Swedish media. “Today, a new slanderous rumour is starting to spread across the web from the Swedish media Aftonbladet. These accusations are completely false and irresponsible, and their propagation is unacceptable,” the statement read. The representatives further announced that they would pursue legal action to clear Mbappe’s name and address what they described as “moral harassment and defamatory treatment.”
The French star’s transition to Real Madrid this summer followed a successful seven-year spell with PSG. Mbappe, who is known for his outstanding achievements on the field, including becoming the only teenager alongside Pele to score in a World Cup final, now faces a challenging time off the pitch with these legal accusations.
As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on how the Swedish authorities handle the case and the potential legal battles that could follow. Meanwhile, a source close to PSG dismissed Mbappe’s claim that the allegations might be linked to his financial dispute with the French club, stating that the club would “ignore” the suggestion of any connection between the two issues.
While the allegations have shaken up the football world, Mbappe remains firm in his denial, emphasizing his intention to clear his name. The coming days will reveal more about the validity of the accusations and the direction of the legal proceedings.
