Four police officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) face serious charges after they allegedly robbed a Nigerian rapper of jewellery worth R20 million, approximately N1.9 billion. The incident occurred on September 14 at the rapper’s home in Llandudno, Cape Town.
The arrested officers, identified as Jacobus Groenewald, Bradley Minnaar, Mthuthuzeli Mafanya, and Bathandwa Soldati, were apprehended by the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit. Reports indicate that the officers staged a robbery at the musician’s residence while wearing their SAPS uniforms and using police vehicles.
Details of the Alleged Robbery
According to sources, the four officers, along with four accomplices who remain unidentified, entered the rapper’s home under false pretenses. They claimed to be searching for a wanted Nigerian criminal. Instead of conducting a legitimate investigation, they proceeded to steal valuable items, including Rolex watches, gold bracelets, emeralds, and ivory pieces, all of which were high-end brands.
“They went to the home of a rich Nigerian and told those in the house they were searching for a wanted Nigerian,” a source from Cape Argus reported. “But instead, they stole jewellery valued at R20 million.”
The report also highlighted the officers’ carelessness during the robbery. “They were so stupid they left their fingerprints all over the house as they stole the items,” the source said. This oversight may have contributed to their quick arrest.
Court Appearance and Charges
The four officers appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court last Thursday, facing charges of aggravated robbery. They are part of a larger group of eight officers who allegedly formed a syndicate to rob wealthy individuals in the area. This group is believed to have used their positions as police officers to exploit and intimidate innocent victims.
“The officers are based at different stations, but they basically formed a syndicate,” the source added, underscoring the coordinated nature of their criminal activities.

Community Outrage and Response
The alleged actions of these officers have sparked outrage within the community and raised concerns about police corruption in South Africa. Many citizens expect accountability and justice for the victims of such crimes, particularly when they involve law enforcement personnel.
The SAPS has faced scrutiny in recent years over issues of corruption and misconduct. The arrest of these officers serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges the police force faces in maintaining public trust.
As the investigation continues, the community is watching closely to see how the legal proceedings unfold. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the reputation of the South African police and their ability to effectively combat crime.
The charges against Groenewald, Minnaar, Mafanya, and Soldati are a stark reminder of the need for integrity within law enforcement. As more details emerge, the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit will likely continue its work to root out corruption and restore faith in the police force. The community awaits justice for the Nigerian rapper and hopes that this case will lead to broader reforms within the South African Police Service.
