The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially withdrawn a press statement concerning the satellite internet service provider, Starlink, acknowledging that the release was issued in error. The NCC sent out a message to media outlets on Tuesday, urging editors and journalists to retract any publications related to the statement.

In the brief message, Kunle Azeez, the NCC’s Manager of Media Relations, wrote, “Kindly note that this press statement on Starlink was issued in error. It is hereby WITHDRAWN. If already published, kindly BRING DOWN.”

The controversy began when Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, initially announced enforcement measures against Starlink due to its decision to raise subscription prices in Nigeria without the NCC’s approval. This announcement raised concerns among consumers and sparked discussions about regulatory oversight in the telecommunications industry.

Last week, Starlink informed its customers about a price hike that would affect both existing and new users. According to the announcement, the cost of the Starlink kit, which includes the necessary hardware for installation, would increase from N440,000 to N590,000—an increase of 34%. This price change stirred reactions from customers who were already accustomed to the previous rates.

Muoka expressed the NCC’s surprise at Starlink’s announcement, stating, “The decision by Starlink to unilaterally review its subscription packages upwards did not receive the approval of the Nigerian Communications Commission.” He further explained that Starlink had previously filed a request for a price adjustment with the NCC, but the commission had not yet approved it.

The sudden price increase and the subsequent withdrawal of the NCC’s statement raise questions about the communication and relationship between service providers and regulatory bodies in Nigeria. As consumers await further clarification, the NCC’s handling of the situation highlights the complexities involved in regulating rapidly evolving technology services.
