The Kano State Police Command has announced significant progress in its efforts to combat crime and ensure public safety, following the arrest of 89 suspected criminals, including armed robbers, drug dealers, and a human trafficking suspect. The arrests were part of an ongoing operation aimed at reducing crime in the state.

Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo Garba, shared this information during a press conference held at the command’s headquarters in Bompal on Monday. Represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the CP explained that the arrests included 15 armed robbery suspects, 10 drug dealers, and one individual involved in human trafficking. In addition to the arrests, police successfully rescued two human trafficking victims and two kidnapping victims.

Kiyawa also highlighted the recovery of a range of illegal items, including dangerous weapons and illicit drugs. “We confiscated 538 bottles of Bacardin Syrup and a large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp,” Kiyawa said, adding that the recovered items were part of the police’s efforts to clamp down on criminal activities in Kano.

The arrests and recoveries were the result of the police command’s strategy of combining community engagement, intelligence-led operations, and continuous patrols across the state. The police spokesperson noted that out of the 89 suspects, 43 have already been charged to court, while 46 others are still under investigation.

Kiyawa emphasized the importance of working with the public to maintain peace and security in the state. “We have been engaging with stakeholders, including media outlets, to educate the public on security tips,” he explained, while also praising the support of the Kano State Government, other security agencies, and the state’s law-abiding residents.

He assured the public that the police had made necessary arrangements to ensure security during and after the Independence Day celebration on October 1, 2024. He urged residents to cooperate with security forces during the celebrations and respect the rights of others. “We call on everyone to celebrate responsibly and remain vigilant,” Kiyawa added.

In a somber note, the police commissioner also extended his condolences to the families of the five police officers who died in a tragic motor accident on September 23, 2024. He thanked the public for their prayers and support for the families of the deceased and the injured victims.

The Kano Police Command remains committed to making Kano a safer place, and the recent arrests mark a critical step toward achieving that goal.
