The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a woman, Khadija Aliyu, for allegedly stealing a seven-day-old baby girl during a naming ceremony in Keffi. The incident occurred on Saturday, and police were able to apprehend the suspect later that evening.

According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Rahman Nansel, the suspect attended the event while pretending to be pregnant. During the ceremony, she sneaked into the house where the baby had been laid to sleep, took the child, and escaped. She carried the baby on her back, covering her with a veil, in an attempt to hide her actions. However, police officers tracked her down and arrested her.

“At about 6:30 pm, police operatives attached to the Keffi Division arrested one Khadija Aliyu for stealing a seven-day-old baby girl during a naming ceremony in Keffi. The suspect, who had been claiming to be pregnant, attended a naming ceremony at Behind INEC office, Keffi. While the event was ongoing, she sneaked into the house, stole the baby, carried her on her back, covered her with a veil, and escaped before she was later arrested,” Nansel explained.

The police are continuing their investigation, and Khadija Aliyu remains in custody.

In another development, police also arrested an ex-convict, Hussaini Mohammed, for allegedly stealing motorcycles in the same area of Keffi. Mohammed, who had recently been released from a correctional facility, was taken into custody following an investigation into stolen motorcycles.

Nansel shared details of the case, stating, “During the investigation, three motorcycles suspected to be stolen were recovered from the suspect as exhibits.”

The Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu Nadada, urged anyone with claims to the stolen motorcycles to visit the Angwan Lambu Division in Keffi and present proof of ownership to reclaim their property.

This is not the first case of baby theft reported in recent times. In July 2023, a 19-year-old woman from Bauchi State, Hajara Usman, was arrested for allegedly stealing a newborn baby in a similar case. She had conspired with an 18-year-old man to carry out the crime.
