A tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a hippopotamus attacked and killed a fisherman, Malam Usman Mai Gadi, at the Yauri River in Kebbi State. The attack took place in Yauri Local Government Area, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
According to witnesses, Malam Usman was fishing along the riverbank when the animal suddenly attacked him. Locals believe the hippopotamus may have acted to protect its newborn calf, perceiving the fisherman as a potential threat. One resident noted, “The hippo had a baby, so it may have seen him as a danger to her young one and acted in defense.”
Before his tragic death, Malam Usman worked as a watchman at the Emir of Yauri’s Orchard Farms. In addition to his duties at the farm, he would fish in the Yauri River to support himself and make a living.
In response to the incident, Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and the entire Yauri community. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, the governor described the incident as unfortunate and prayed for the soul of the late fisherman. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Malam Usman. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Emir of Yauri, and the people of Yauri,” the statement read.
Malam Usman has since been buried according to Islamic rites. His death has left a lasting impact on the Yauri community, where he was known for his dedication to both his work and his fishing.
The attack has raised concerns about the growing presence of wildlife in the area, especially as humans and animals continue to interact along the riverbanks. While hippos are generally known to be aggressive when they feel threatened, attacks on humans are rare, but locals are urged to remain cautious near the river.
The community continues to mourn the loss of Malam Usman, a man remembered for his hard work and commitment to providing for his family.
