Retired General Theophilus Danjuma, a former Chief of Army Staff, has called on the Nigerian military to take decisive action to end the ongoing insecurity and killings across the country. He made this statement during a book launch in Abuja on Tuesday, emphasizing that the military has no reason not to tackle the issue head-on.
Danjuma spoke during the public presentation of Big Boots: Lessons from My Military Service, a book written by retired Major General Solomon Udounwa. In his speech, Danjuma stressed the urgency of addressing the security challenges facing the nation.
“The number one problem today is security,” Danjuma stated firmly. “We must end the pandemic and stop the killings that are going on in our country as soon as possible. Those of you who are still serving have no excuses, absolutely no!”
His words reflected growing concerns among Nigerians about the persistent security threats posed by bandits, insurgents, and other violent groups in various parts of the country. The retired general, known for his outspoken views on national issues, made it clear that the military should be able to put an end to the violence.
In response to Danjuma’s challenge, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, acknowledged the responsibility of the Armed Forces to ensure peace and security in Nigeria. He assured the public that the military is committed to restoring stability across the nation despite the challenges it faces.
“Let me at least also mention to our distinguished chairman that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are positioned, willing, dedicated, and committed to ensuring that we restore peace and security in our dear country,” Musa responded. “We shall not be deterred. There are going to be challenges, yes, but that’s why we’re here.”
Musa further added that the military is drawing inspiration from senior officers like Danjuma, whose leadership and service continue to guide the Armed Forces. “We have learned a lot from your record, very, very distinguished senior officers who have modeled us all through the years. We cannot afford to fail, and we will not fail.”
The event highlighted the growing pressure on Nigeria’s security forces to step up their efforts in combating insecurity. While progress has been made in some areas, the rising number of attacks and kidnappings in certain regions has left many Nigerians worried about their safety.
Danjuma’s call to action serves as a reminder that the military plays a crucial role in protecting the nation, and the people are looking to them for solutions. The retired general’s words, combined with the resolve expressed by the current leadership of the Armed Forces, signal a renewed focus on tackling the country’s security challenges.
The book launch provided an opportunity for military leaders, both retired and serving, to reflect on their roles in maintaining peace and stability. As Nigeria continues to face threats to its security, the public remains hopeful that the Armed Forces will rise to the challenge and fulfill their duty to protect lives and property.
